What is Harambee?
South Central Jurisdiction (SCJ) Harambee of the Black Methodists for Church Renewal is a bi-annual jurisdictional gathering of youth and leaders which rotate between the three Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the Jurisdiction, Huston-Tillotson University, Philander Smith College and Wiley College. This year Houston-Tillotson, Austin, TX will be the host campus,
July 19-22, 2018. Our vision is to have a total of 150 students representing each Conference
throughout the Jurisdiction.
This gathering is specifically for African American youth within the South Central Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church. During this gathering, youth will fellowship with other United Methodists youth from across the Jurisdiction as they engage in lectures, worship and spiritual formation. Youth will return to their home churches and communities inspired, encouraged and informed. They will be guided in how to implement their experiences and learning into their schools, churches and extended community as leaders charged to make Disciples of Jesus Christ and change the face of their community and world.
The South Central Jurisdiction Chapter of BMCR works to bring those youth together, providing opportunities for them to share activities, fellowship, develop leadership skills, serve and grow in faith.
This event takes place every other year. Youth and leaders will:
— Participate in workshops that help them learn about the connectional system of the United
Methodist Church and the role of each local church within that system.
— Receive leadership training in areas of spiritual growth, as they learn about the mission of the church.
— Experience the scope of what it means to be a part of the global church, as United Methodist youth and leaders from all over the world worship and serve together.
— Learn about the Wesleyan tradition of piety and mercy, which helps them to become disciples who work to change the world.
— Assist youth in demonstrating their expression of faith in different ways, including debate, art, mission/service, visit to the Capitol and participation at three of the local African American
